one last dose of summer [ lexington portrait photographer: melanie mauer ]

just popping in with a hello and a peek from a session with three amazing girls & their incredible parents.  mom’s style quotient is off the charts which made this shoot extra extra fun…so was seeing them again at ballet under the stars a few weeks ago!  oh, and before i forget…i want to pass along a couple links:

an article about playful parenting i love (thank you to the author for permission to post a time bit here)

idea #4: “the cereal trick”

In their book How To Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk, Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish describe an approach to help kids get unstuck from something upsetting.

In the illustration, a toddler asks his mother for a certain kind of cereal, a cereal that they don’t have in the house.  Instead of arguing back and forth over the cereal, the mom tells her little one, “I wish I had the magic power to make a giant box appear!”  The authors write, “Sometimes just having someone understand how much you want something makes the reality easier to bear.”

I like to take this technique and run with it.  For example, one day our two-year-old was angry and pouting over not being able to go to the zoo that day.  Instead of trying to explain how it was too hot and the animals wouldn’t be out and we would all be cranky and disappointed, I said, “I wish we had a zoo right in our backyard.  Wouldn’t that be so cool?  What animals would you like to have in a backyard zoo?  Oh yes, definitely crocodiles.  How about giraffes?  Yes, and hippos, too!  Hey, let’s draw a picture of our backyard zoo!”

…playfully creating a fantasy seems help smooth over the feelings of frustration and disappointment that are often the source of unpleasant behaviors.  Read the rest of the article here :)

And this cute etsy shop is getting some love from some of my favorite people, including Whitney @ English Paper Co….darling return address stamps. (Is it painfully obvious how weak-in-the-knees i get over cute paper things?).  -m-

new bluegrass wedding/reception location: ardmore farm, versailles ky

i recently toured an incredible spot for weddings and had to pass it along in case anyone out there is struggling to find a gorgeous spot for their wedding.  ardmore farm in versailles is stunning…let me take you on a little tour :)  you pass this pretty creek as you enter the property and drive over a stone bridge.

ceremony possibility #2

See why i had to share?  It really took my breath away.  So, here’s contact information…Ivey Henton (iveyhenton@aol.com)…and since it’s *just* become available (website is still in the works), there’s so much more flexibility for 2011 dates.  It’s so quiet you feel like you’re tucked away in your own world.  Hope you’re having the best Tuesday!  warmly, -melanie-

quote of the day

away on an adventure

i’ve been away on an adventure this last week and a travelogue of the trip is here…feeling inspired by the change in scenery & soul stirring friendship.

In the greatest confusion there is still an open channel to the soul.

It may be difficult to find because by mid-life it is overgrown…but the channel is always there,

and it is our business to keep it open, to have access to the deepest part of ourselves. [ saul bellow ]

i love the refreshment that comes from grand adventures…as i stepped out of the cabin on my way home, i paused to savor the sweet smell of the air and make a mental memory.  incalculable thanks to sarah and millie for planning such a great trip to moab for us :)  xoxo

lexington cancer foundation auction

early summer brought three amazing events with the lexington cancer foundation – below is a peek :)  i’m so very taken with this incredible group and the generosity of their hearts.

kindness in words creates confidence. kindness in thinking creates profundity. kindness in giving creates love. [ lao-tse ]

quote of the day

the Shoultz siblings

i love catching up a wee bit on blogging to share some of these fun sessions with you!  and i l-o-v-e sibling shoots…maybe because i love my own brother so much, and i love the transformation that happens from age 8 when you’re complaining to your mom that your brother got into all your stickers to what is now one of the truest and deepest friendships there is.  love you, matt!

i can only imagine how happy this trio made their parents with this *surprise* they planned for them.  their brilliance is obviously coupled with thoughtfulness :)  what a sublime pleasure!  thank you, thank you for allowing me to share this beautiful early evening with you!  warmly, -melanie-

To the outside world, we all grow old. But not to brothers and sisters. We know each other as we always were. We know each other’s hearts. We share private family jokes. We remember family griefs and joys. We live outside the touch of time. [ clara ortega ]

Happy Summer!  warmly, -melanie-

i heart grand rapids

you know what’s fun? traveling to a place with no expectations and being totally blown away by how wonderful it is.  embarrassingly, i thought grand rapids was like a mini version of detroit.  and well, detroit has seen happier days, right?  but no, grand rapids is f-a-n-t-a-s-t-i-c…particularly when you’re invited by the most fantastic photo lab on the planet, stay at this wonderful hotel (close to the art museum pictured!) nestled in one of the nicest mid-sized downtowns i’ve seen in ages, meet tons of great area photographers and wrap up the day with a gathering here and get to know dee, from red letter words. what a wonderful tuesday and wednesday :)

we choose our vendors carefully…and while I’ve been so happy with our lab, it means a lot to now *know* them.  to meet Tim & Dee and see the impact for good they have on the lives around them. i’m not typically one to be impressed so quickly (well, client cuteness at a photo session aside!)  – but when i see a business that operates to the ideals that i hold close, and a couple that moves so happily through this life as they do…I walk away feeling enriched and grateful for the time in their company.

glad of heart for the chance to have been blown away by Grand Rapids…thanks for letting me gush!  (hope to get back there one year for the art prize event GR hosts!) A big big thank you to everyone at Color Inc…you are wonderful beyond compare!

rachel + roy [ lexington photographer ]

i love anniversary shoots…since the first anniversary gift is paper, i think they’re a perfect way to celebrate! this session fell on a really incredible day – rachel’s graduation celebration (she was on her way to see wicked later)!  i feel so honored that clients choose a session with me as a way to mark these really iconic times in their lives…and all the moments in between.  this sweet couple lives right around the corner from me so i’ve had to resist knocking on their door to say ‘hey, i just made great lasagna – want some?’.  so, without further ado, the crazy cute rachel & roy…yes, rachel has *the* sweetest bike around and she picked up the most darling bunch of huge peonies prior to the shoot!

To love is to find pleasure in the happiness of the person loved. [ Leibnitz ]

lexington engagement photography: ashlie + anthony

i adored meeting ashlie & anthony…we went to a beautiful family farm (what a treat!!) and of all the images, this one probably tied as a favorite because it speaks of holding those you love close.  there’s something incredibly sweet and unassuming about these two and they seem perfectly content with one another’s company. ashlie & anthony, i’m glad to have met you a few weeks before you become mr & mrs…grateful for your warmth that made me feel instantly at ease by your side.  i’m so hopeful that there are more moments to document your family as the years unfold.  enjoy each day together (somehow, i already know you will)!  warmly, -melanie-

we’ve got this gift of love, but love is like a precious plant.

you can’t just accept it and leave it in the cupboard or just think it’s

going to get on by itself. you’ve got to keep watering it. you’ve got to really look after it.

summertime

summers are always so busy on my end, but this year, i’ve also been especially conscientious about savoring the season.  there’s something about this time of year that has left me mindful of countering the rapid pace of life with a more balanced way of living that picks quality over quantity.

last week, my husband called and asked if we could head to hilton head…in a few hours!  so after delegating and rearranging, we were on the road for our previously scheduled staycation and found ourselves beachside.  so grateful for this new summer memory to hold in my heart.  here’s to you, to summer…and to life.  so glad to be near you.  xo, -melanie-

love*love*love silly 4 yr olds!  (audrey + a bottle cap on a bicycle break this past weekend)
